OCD
OSTEOCHONDROSIS OF THE SHOULDER

This condition commonly occurs in the shoulders of immature large & giant breeds of dogs. Although the dog may be lame in only one leg, it is commonly the opposite leg that is affected.
A small flap of cartilage becomes loose on the ball joint – this may detach completely from the bone and become a ‘mouse’. If it is only a small piece it may become lodged on the head and be reabsorbed on the cartilage. A large flap may need removing.
Very restricted exercise is important for 6 weeks (the length of time the cartilage takes to re-grow & repair). If the lameness ceases then an operation will not be necessary.
